La Chiropratica è un’arte curativa basata sul principio che il corpo umano ha delle capacità naturali di mantenersi in salute senza farmaci o chirurgia. D.D. Palmer fece il suo primo trattamento Chiropratico (“aggiustamento”) nel 1895 a Davenport, Iowa, non lontano da dove ora sorge il campus del Palmer College.
D.D. Palmer capì che la salute dipende da un sistema nervoso ben funzionante che controlla tutti gli altri organi e tessuti del corpo.
Trentun paia di nervi si irradiano ai lati della colonna. Sono racchiusi e protetti da 24 vertebre mobili che partono dalla base del cranio fino all’osso sacro e al cingolo pelvico.
La parola chiave della colonna è “mobilità”, infatti essa è un sistema dinamico che deve adattarsi a tutte le esigenze e domande a cui il corpo è sottoposto. Incidenti, cattiva postura, carenze nutrizionali, tensioni o altri fattori possono alterare la mobilità della colonna creando lievi spostamenti di una o più vertebre.
Questi spostamenti vertebrali, oltre a provocare dolori localizzati, possono creare disfunzioni di un organo o il deterioramento dei tessuti verso i quali si irradia il nervo implicato.
LE RADICI DELLA CHIROPRATICA
Benché le radici della Filosofia Chiropratica siano state tracciate da Ippocrate, essa fu articolata, concretizzata e applicata da Daniel David Palmer, fondatore della Chiropratica come professione, nonché del primo Istituto di Chiropratica: il “Palmer College”.
La visione naturale della salute, come dimostrato dall’interesse sempre più crescente per la Chiropratica, è molto attraente, specie oggigiorno, poiché la società è diventata sempre più dipendente da farmaci costosi e da chirurgia invasiva e, benché concetti come mantenimento della salute e cure olistiche (di tutta la persona) siano diventati più correnti, furono utilizzati dalla Chiropratica sin dai tempi di D.D. Palmer.
L’incredibile sviluppo della professione Chiropratica in questo secolo fin dal primo trattamento (aggiustamento vertebrale) di D.D. Palmer, prova sia la crescente consapevolezza del pubblico che la validità della filosofia di Palmer, una visione che certamente continuerà a perdurare sempre più accettata anche in futuro.
Nell’anno del nostro centenario vorrei presentarvi la storia della famiglia Palmer, uomini e donne straordinari che nel corso di tre generazioni hanno contribuito enormemente al diffondersi della Chiropratica.
Daniel David Palmer, normalmente chiamato D.D., suo figlio Bartlett Joshua Palmer, chiamato B.J. e suo figlio David D. Palmer spesso chiamato Dr. Dave.
Ciascuno di loro è stato una personalità dinamica con forza unica; individui ideali per lo sviluppo della professione: D.D. Palmer era l’innovatore e fondatore, B.J. il divulgatore e promotore e il Dr. Dave l’educatore e manager. Li accomunava l’ambizione, la determinazione e la visione straordinaria della Chiropratica intesa come una scienza con un approccio completamente naturale alla salute.
Il concetto dei Palmer resta la vera essenza della Chiropratica moderna.
Molte persone credono erroneamente che i chiropratici curino solo problemi ortopedici come mali di schiena, sciatiche, colpi di frusta e problemi ai dischi.
E’ effettivamente vero che i trattamenti della colonna si sono rivelati efficaci per questi e altri problemi sin dai tempi di Ippocrate, ma quello che D.D. Palmer aveva percepito e quello che suo figlio e suo nipote hanno divulgato e insegnato per il bene di milioni di pazienti, era la visione che il corpo è meravigliosamente equipaggiato per autorigenerarsi. I trattamenti della colonna non sono solo benefici per problemi ortopedici, ma possono dare un impulso a tutti gli organi e tessuti perché funzionino in maniera ottimale.
Quindi dall’intuizione di D.D. Palmer il corpo è diventato molto più di un meccanismo, complesso sì ma impersonale. I Palmer intuirono la forza vitale che opera nel nostro essere, per mezzo di un’intelligenza subcosciente, focalizzata a ripristinare e preservare il benessere del nostro corpo.
La visione di Palmer dava dignità al corpo umano e alle cure da dedicargli; questa visione elevata del corpo come insieme di organi, di fisiologia, neuroanatomia, biochimica, ma anche di forza innata atta a ripristinare la salute, è la filosofia che lega i Palmer e l’istituto che porta il loro nome (“Palmer College”). Per questo il “Palmer College of Chiropractic” è il caposcuola filosofico di tutte le scuole.
IL PRIMO TRATTAMENTO CHIROPRATICO
II primo trattamento di D.D. Palmer ebbe dei risultati incredibili. Un certo Harvey Lillard, capo dei servizi di pulizia dello stabile in cui D.D. aveva il suo studio, era sordo dall’età di 17 anni. Aveva raccontato a D.D. di essere diventato sordo un giorno dopo aver sentito un rumore al suo collo. D.D. trovò una “sporgenza dura” e sospettando che ciò indicasse uno spostamento vertebrale, spinse il segmento vertebrale. Le testimonianze affermano che l’uomo poco dopo ricominciò a sentire come una persona normale. D.D. Palmer scrisse poi che la cosa non era stata accidentale: “Quando feci questa manovra ero certo che avrebbe dato il risultato voluto”.
CHI DIEDE IL NOME ALLA CHIROPRATICA?
Poco dopo questo suo primo trattamento ad Harvey Lillard, D. D. Palmer cercò di trovare un nome a questa nuova tecnica.
D.D. disse al Pastore Samuel H. Weed, uno studioso di lingue antiche, di aver scoperto un tipo di trattamento per il quale non aveva ancora un nome. Weed suggerì diversi termini. D.D. li esaminò tutti e alla fine scelse il termine “Chiropratica”, una combinazione di due parole greche: “cheir” che significa “mano” e “praktos” che vuol dire “fatto”. Chiropratica, ovvero “fatto con le mani”.
COME CI AIUTA LA CHIROPRATICA?
La Chiropratica è un trattamento di tipo conservativo, nel quale il Chiropratico enfatizza la prevenzione al fine di focalizzare l’attenzione del paziente nell’eliminare la causa nascosta del problema, e nel quale non è importante solo curare i sintomi.
Uno o più segmenti della colonna vertebrale possono bloccarsi, creando ciò che i Chiropratici chiamano ’sublussazione’ , oppure può alterarsi il suo funzionamento dinamico e allora la trasmissione nervosa può essere intaccata causando dolore e anche disfunzione organica. Con un trattamento specifico, attento e delicato del segmento interessato, il Chiropratico ripristina la corretta mobilità della colonna, eliminando la sublussazione e l’interferenza nervosa.
Quando è ripristinato il corretto funzionamento nervoso, si ha un sollievo sintomatologico e il corpo riesce a ritrovare l’energia per riequilibrarsi.
I trattamenti chiropratici possono aiutare le autodifese del nostro organismo per permettere alla capacità di recupero del nostro corpo di ottenere il massimo della funzionalità.
La Chiropratica è un tipo di cura responsabile e moderno, dove non è importante solo un rapido risultato sintomatologico, ma si cerca di arrivare alle cause delle disfunzioni e di correggerle.
Per questo il Chiropratico nel corso dei trattamenti incoraggia il paziente a trovare il giusto equilibrio tra esercizi, riposo, alimentazione corretta e attitudine mentale positiva.
